Taken from the Greek words “Kanna” meaning “looms” and “opolis” meaning “city” the city of looms, Kannapolis was founded in 1887, as headquarters for the Cannon Mills Corp. This friendly, flourishing city of nearly 40,000 is now home to the new North Carolina Research Campus, a stunning venture between Dole Foods, Duke University and the University of NC. David Murdock, CEO of Dole Foods and former owner of Cannon Mills, is the visionary catalyst for this new endeavor. Built on the site of the former textile mill, this campus-like redevelopment forges a bold new path for the city. Gone are the views of what Kannapolis has been in recent years, now the vision for this city will conjure up fresh ideas of a thriving town with a prosperous economy.
